Day 17’s stitch of the day for Embroidery Book Club Bingo is the running stitch!

This is the simplest type of flat stitch where the thread is worked in and out of the fabric continuously. From the RSN stitchbank: running stitches are equally sized straight surface stitches spaced at regular intervals to produce a simple line. You want to make sure your stitches are the same size, and that your space between stitches is consistent (it can be the same size as your stitch or smaller or larger, just consistent!)

Running stitch has many uses, such as gathering, quilting, outlining, reinforcement for cutwork as well as the base for other stitches.

Day 16’s stitch of the day is the detached chain stitch, also known as the Lazy daisy stitch.

A detached chain stitch is a single chain secured using a holding stitch over the loop instead of another chain. This elongated version is the one mostly known as a lazy daisy, but it can be worked as shorter detached chain stitch for filling or for embellishment (like rain drops, blood drops, tear drops, etc).

Stem fill is simply using rows of stem stich to fill an area. Some tips: you want your stitches next to each other, but not too close together as you don’t want them too crowded for the twist effect (which happens if they’re really more stacked on each other than next to each other). Your goal is to cover the fabric but not crowd the stitches too much.

The stitches in each line are not necessarily right next to the stem stitches in the previous line. I generally off-set the stitches, by ending each stem stitch next to the “dip” where two stitches overlap in the previous line. So the stitches in the new line are not lined up exactly at the starting and ending point of the stitches in the previous line. They’re just slightly off-set.
Occasionally, you might end up with stitches right next to each other – in the big picture of the whole design, that won’t be noticed. But you’ll find as you stitch the filling that you will naturally want to off-set the stitches in each line, because they just fit together better. You can see how they fit together as you’re stitching – go for that fit, but don’t pack each line in so closely that the stitches lose their shape.

I love this stitch for filling large solid areas, and even for some subtle shading by shifting colors a little each row.

Embroidery Book Club Bingo- Day 14’s stitch of the day is the Whipped Back Stitch!

From RSN Stitchbank: Whipped back stitch makes a heavier line than a back stitch. It gives a similar effect to a stem stitch but a touch finer with the added bonus that it can be stitched in two separate colour threads if required. This technique is useful when a raised line is required on a fabric which is too delicate for a heavy thread to be embroidered directly through the weave. You can use a blunt tapestry needle for the whipping, or the eye end of your needle to avoid splitting your backstitches.
